No. We accept both medical and non-medical backgrounds. Most attendees are nurses, HCAs, audiologists, pharmacists and other allied health professionals, but we also welcome career changers, complementary therapists and anyone with the right to work in the UK.
It is Day 1 of your course, done online at your own pace before your practical day. Access opens as soon as you book and pay. There are 17 modules in 4 parts (How the ear works, Assessing the ear, Safe treatment, and Patients and aftercare), each with short videos, written lessons and a multiple-choice quiz, followed by a final theory assessment. Topics include ear anatomy, the eustachian tube and eustachian tube dysfunction, hearing and hearing loss, hearing aids, ear wax, otoscopy, grommets, T-tubes and previous ear surgery (recognise and refer), an 89-condition visual library, red flags and referral, consent and records, infection control, the theory of microsuction, irrigation and manual removal, complications, equipment safety, special patients (children aged 5+ subject to insurance, older adults and home visits), communication and aftercare. It was created by our training team.
About 7 hours in total. You work through it at your own pace, and we suggest about an hour a day over a week. Each module is broken into short videos, written lessons and a quiz, so it is easy to fit around work.
Yes. The Online Theory Day is compulsory. You need to pass it, including the module quizzes (80% pass mark) and the final theory assessment, before your practical day, and your results are reviewed and signed off by our clinical team. Access opens as soon as you book, so start early and give yourself time.
Because the theory is done beforehand in your Online Theory Day. By the time you arrive, our clinical team has reviewed your theory results, so the practical day is all hands-on: microsuction, irrigation and manual removal, in a small group of no more than 6.
You review the material and retake it. The module quizzes can be retaken too, so you can go back over the lessons and try again. If anything is unclear, email hello@wax.co.uk and we will help.
Yes. It is CPD-accredited and aligned with BSA, NICE and HCPC standards. The certificate is recognised by insurers, employers and regulators for professional development purposes.
Yes, provided you have insurance and equipment. The Training + Equipment tier walks you out with the kit; you will need to arrange your own indemnity insurance. We include post-course support to help you set up.
No. We teach from the ground up. Some clinical familiarity (otoscope handling, infection control basics) helps you get the most out of the day, but you don't need to have done wax removal before.
Most of the day. Because the theory is covered beforehand in your Online Theory Day, your practical day is spent on supervised microsuction, irrigation and manual instrumentation in a small group of no more than 6. You don't leave until you've done all three.
We work with you on the day to get you there. If we cannot sign you off (this is rare), we'll arrange a free repeat session at a future date. Nobody pays twice.
Free tea, coffee and water are provided throughout the day. Lunch isn't included, but the venue has an on-site restaurant if you'd like to eat during the lunch break.
Yes. Every training venue has free on-site parking. If you are travelling by train, most venues are within 15 minutes of a major station.
Nothing. We provide all training equipment on the day. If you'd rather train on your own otoscope or loupe, you're welcome to bring it.
The Training + Equipment tier at £1,250 includes a full starter kit. If you want kit without the training, or extra consumables on top, get in touch and we will quote you directly.
Email and phone support for clinical questions, business setup, equipment troubleshooting, or anything else that comes up in your first weeks of practice. There is no time limit.
Card at checkout, or Klarna in 3 monthly instalments at 0% interest. NHS and corporate bookings can be invoiced on request at hello@wax.co.uk.
